Basta Is a system for anyone who wants to make conscious product selections with the aim of phasing out substances of concern – for example building owners, contractors, architects, structural engineers or individuals. The building and construction products found in the BASTA database fulfill BASTA’s requirements for chemical content. The European Community Regulation REACH is the foundation for BASTA’s requirements for chemical content. The BASTA database search function is open and freely available to everyone. A Logbook is a web-based tool for documenting product selections at all stages of the building- and construction process. The tool meets the documentation and chemcal content requirements in Miljöbyggnad.
A self-declaration system where suppliers and manufacturers of building and construction products register products that meet the BASTA or BETA criteria requirement concerning substances with hazardous properties. By undertaking regular third party audits of the suppliers in the system we assure the quality of the information found in the BASTA system. By phasing out substances of concern from construction products the BASTA system contributes to Sweden’s national environmental quality objective of “A Non-Toxic Environment”.
Major players in the construction industry support BASTA, as do authorities such as the Swedish Chemicals Agency and the Swedish Transport Administration. BASTA is a non-profit-driven company and is jointly owned by IVL – the Swedish Environmental Research Institute, and the Swedish Construction Federation.
